When the student is ready, the teacher will appear.

The Hierophant

All students need a teacher.  The teacher, however, does not always take the form of a person.  The teacher is anything that opens your mind and shows you the way.  Therefore, it may be your research, nature or sacred texts and wisdom.  Very often, however, it is through the established wisdom given us that we learn what does and does not work.  As such, the Hierophant not only represents the teacher or a guide, but also forms of established wisdom.  With it, some blindly comply.  Some rebel.  Most of us, however, live somewhere in the middle of these two extremes. Even though established knowledge and traditions can be restrictive, even the newest ideas cannot be born without a foundation of what has gone before.  The Hierophant, therefore, represents the process by which the sacred is revealed – the act of teaching and guiding.

There is one aspect of the Hierophant, however, that is often overlooked, as its teaching aspect is emphasized.  This card points out that to teach is to learn.  Thus, the teacher must become the student!

Weekly Advice

The Hierophant is very conventional and suggests that a desire to follow due process and to stay within the conventional bounds of what is typically an orthodox approach.  The card points out that for this week, instead of being innovative, you will need to adapt to the existing set of beliefs and systems that are already in place.  You will need to do what is expected of you.  This is certainly not a time to challenge the status quo!

The Hierophant suggests that you may be wise to follow established social structures and traditions.  But also, there is also a need to honor some tradition in your life, or maybe start some new traditions of your own.  Consider exploring your spiritual or religious heritage.
