THE HANGED MAN

Hanged Man

Hanged ManIt is through sacrifice that we come to understand worth.

Traditional meanings of the HANGED MAN Card include self-sacrifice, humility, patience, letting go and gaining a new perspective.  It is, however, much more than that.  The HANGED MAN is one of the more obscure, yet one of the deepest and multi-dimensional cards in the deck.  For it raises the questions:  for whom do me make the sacrifice; what do we sacrifice; and most importantly, WHY?

To answer that, let’s look at the planet ruling The HANGED MAN: Neptune.  Neptune is a planet of separating oneself from individual distinctions and merging with the collective unconsciousness.  Thus, The HANGED MAN points out that this is the time to consider a voluntary, yet, perhaps, painful change.  For he is calling us to sacrifice our self to Higher Power.  It is only when we yield internally, when we fully and willingly surrender, only then will a new dimension of consciousness open up for us.  It is the moment right before transformation that requires that you replace certainties of the past by new images.  And that is not always easy to bear.

Options and Crossroads

As a Card Of The Week, The Hanged Man indicates a crossroads – one with only two options: in or out; up or down.  Thus, you may find yourself very much wanting to do ‘something’ but having no idea what it is or how to do it.  If that happens, that’s a clear sign that you should stop, relax and look at ways you might need to let go of attempts to control life/situations/people/things.

It is quite possible that there is an outdated attitude or wish that you need to let go.  Any sacrifice that you make will open up your life to something even more positive than what you ‘let go of.’  All in all this should be a thoughtful, reflective time, particularly if you are willing to look at if or how you might best serve your own interests by being willing to change.  It is crucial now to let go of any negative, self-limiting believes.  Remember the idea of the self-fulfilling prophesy and be very careful about  what you allow yourself to say or think about your life.  Make sure the ‘prophecies’ you are making about your life bear some resemblance to the life you really wish to see.

Finally, remember: when we think the gods have abandoned us,  we, instead, grew closer to them.
